18 Things You Should Know About Battleship


So here we are, a $200 million film based on Battleship. You know, the matrix-based board game that mixes hide and seek with geometry class.

But is that a bad thing inherently? The lack of a narrative canon obviously has its problems, but why can’t it also be a freeing thing, allowing a talented team of filmmakers to create a big canvas action adventures with a loose name attached undercut financial risk?

That’s what Battleship looks to be.

Syfy Renews Haven For Third Season


NEW YORK – October 12, 2011 – Syfy’s hit series Haven, the #1 original scripted cable entertainment program among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 in its Friday 10-11PM (ET/PT) time period (based on Live +7 data), will return for a third season of 13 new episodes in 2012, it was announced today by Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions.

During its second season, Haven averaged a 1.9 HH rating, 995,000 Adults18-49, 1.14 million Adults 25-54 and 2.55 million total viewers, rising four percent among total viewers and five percent among Adults 18-49 compared to season one (Live +7 data).

In making the announcement, Stern said: “The superb cast, led by Emily Rose, Eric Balfour and Lucas Bryant, along with the terrific production team, delivered a successful season in both critical acclaim and rising viewership. We’re very excited to see this compelling series return for a third season of supernatural intrigue in 2012.”

Haven, based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King, follows former FBI agent Audrey Parker (Rose), who becomes a cop in the small town of Haven, Maine, and soon discovers the town’s many secrets, which also holds the key to unlocking the mysteries of her lost past.

A longtime refuge for people with an eclectic range of supernatural abilities, Haven also holds the key to unlocking the mysteries of Audrey’s lost past.  Among the townspeople are Nathan Wuornos (Bryant), a handsome local cop with his own supernatural affliction, and Duke Crocker (Balfour), a smuggler and reluctant aide in solving Haven's troubles.

From leading independent studio Entertainment One. Haven is co-commissioned by Shaw Media in Canada and globally via Universal Networks International (UNI).

The creative team behind Haven includes Executive Producers John Morayniss (The Firm, Hell on Wheels) and Noreen Halpern (Hung, Rookie Blue) from eOne Television and David MacLeod (Legends of the Fall, The Ray Bradbury Theater) of Big Motion Pictures, who are joined by Lloyd Segan, Shawn Piller, Scott Shepherd (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone) of Piller/Segan/Shepherd and Matt McGuinness (Journeyman) as well as Sam Ernst & Jim Dunn (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone), who also developed the series.

Haven is produced by Entertainment One and Big Motion Pictures in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd and airs on Syfy in the U.S., Showcase in Canada and internationally on UNI’s multiple Syfy Universal channels. Entertainment One controls the worldwide distribution rights to the one-hour series and concluded a deal with Germany’s Tele München Group (TMG) for the television rights in Continental Europe.

HBO Drinks Up Third Season of Boardwalk Empire


HBO has decided to bring back BOARDWALK EMPIRE for a third season, writes The Hollywood Reporter. The Prohibition-era gangster drama stars Steve Buscemi as the corrupt Atlantic City treasurer who maneuvers around other mobsters and crooked politicians to keep on top of the illegal alcohol business. Terence Winter created the show, which he exec produces with Martin Scorsese, who recently won a directing Emmy for the series' pilot. Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg also exec produce.

Depp's Lone Ranger to Ride Again


Disney has struck a deal with director Gore Verbinski, star Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to put the stalled LONE RANGER back into production, reports Deadline.com. The word is that filming will resume early next year in New Mexico. When the film will be released is uncertain considering that the new start date makes hitting the originally announced date of Dec. 21, 2012 very difficult.


Verbinski, Depp and Bruckheimer all took cuts in their financial deals and reworked the script in order to retain the spectacle, but bring the production to a $215 million budget.


The story follows a nearly dead Texas Ranger (Armie Hammer) who is saved by Comanche Tonto (Depp), who trains the former lawman to be a masked avenger. The cast also includes Tom Wilkinson, Helena Bonham Carter, Dwight Yoakam and Barry Pepper.
